The new 230 SL sports car, quickly named “Pagoda” because of the shape of its hardtop, was a multi-talented car. It easily replaced the predecessor 190 SL. But it wasn’t a successor to the famous 300 SL. There was still a gap. The new SL should be a sports two-seater with high performance, optimal handling and high ride comfort. That’s exactly what this car was able to do. Thus the cars from the 250 SL to the 280 SL became the success story of the series. With this model development, Mercedes also implemented the automatic transmission on a broad basis.
Our Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Roadster was originally delivered in the US and has been based in Germany since 1990. The Kienle company completely restored it in 2004, which is documented in detail. The “pagoda” was a highlight in a collection of classic vehicles, driven only a few miles, and maintained well. This car is not any car of the series but fulfills even the highest of expectations.
