Finally, in July 1953, Daimler-Benz introduced a new model series in pontoon style with the model 180. The high end clientele for 6-cylinder engines, however, had to wait until March of 1954 when the Mercedes 220a finally arrived with a very cleverly extended wheelbase. The extended engine compartment added to the model’s more elegant and grown up look compared to the slightly chubby 4-cylinder. Initially, it’s price was a steep DM 12,500.
Our Mercedes-Benz 220 a Limousine features the large Webasto foldable sliding roof with sunshield and as windbreakers which is very rare! The car was first released in Duisburg to the Raab Karcher shipping company. From 1958 to 1965 it was with Moritz von Cornap in Karlsruhe, then in private hands and since 2005 with its current owner. The partial restoration of the engine and carburetor is documented with images. Since then the oldtimer has hardly been driven. The last couple of years it has been in service with Mercedes-Benz body shops but still could use a little TLC (tender loving care). It is registered and immediately driveable!
